Vedica Scholars 2017a

This page contains information regarding the course: Logical and Mathematical Thinking taught as part of the Vedica Scholars Programme, over 5 weeks in April-May 2017.

Resources:

1. Week 1:

Presentations:
Week 1-Lecture 1
Week 1 - Lecture 2

Reading:  Raymond Smullyan's What is the name of this book? The riddle of Dracula and other
logical puzzles. Chapters 1 and 2.

Assignment 1. Do all the puzzles in this chapter. You are encouraged to solve on your own, and then discuss your reasoning with others. But its a good idea to write down your reasoning on your own.

2. Week 2:
Presentation: Week 2 - Lecture 1
Reading:
Experience Mathematics, by Gaurav Bhatnagar.
Assignment 2: Do the following problem sets. 1, 2, 4, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26.
(Extra credit: If you do them neatly, writing your own answers (not just copy from the book), and hand them in, I can use them for up to 25 extra credit points to be added at the end of the semester. Will only be graded in the end.)

Expect to spend 30 mins to an hour on each problem set, so begin immediately.

3.  Week 3:

Reading: Mathematics and the Imagination, last chapter (Change and Changeability, on the Calculus).
Download and install on your machines: Sage from http://www.sagemath.org
(We will do 11th and 12 class calculus on Sage)

Assignment 3:

www.desmos.com  a graphic calculator on the internet You can also try sage.

If Sage is not working, download and install WXMaxima Maxima is a part of Sage and what is used for mathematical experimentation. The big advantage of Sage is that one can program in Sage using the easy to use language, Python. (Maxima does have its own language, too; but I prefer python since its very easy.)

4. Week 3-4:

Assignment 4

Look over the following and see if you are able to do some of the examples using a computer.

5. Week 5:

Mathematics of Finance: We will cover Chapter 9 of this book. However, we will use MS-Excel to do the problems.
